Tyler, The Creator has long been a vocal supporter and advocate for young creators around the world. Now he’s set to continue Converse’s on-going Artist Series with 21-year-old Spencer McMullen, a Florida-born who had his first encounter with Tyler back when he was 16 years old, and now has the opportunity to share his creative artistic work with his very own Chuck 70.
Through hand drawn prints, those characters are, for the first time, positioned across the parchment canvas of the Converse Chuck 70, a modern ode to Chuck Taylor All Star crafted with premium materials, deliberate nuance and an extraordinary attention to detail. Spencer created each scene in his LA-based home studio and designed a split-side execution on the silhouette that is imaginative, colorful and personal.
“After growing up with the brand, applying my artwork to this sneaker was really a dream come true,” said McMullen. “But I didn’t want to disrupt the silhouette too much, because it is perfect in its simplicity. So, over a few months, I worked on new drawings and paintings to feature on the canvas, pulling inspiration from real stories that are documented around me – like books and photos on the internet of my life back in Jacksonville. I also kept a new, blank Chuck 70 on my desk to look at every day and I spread all my work on the floor around me to assess and arrange in different ways.”
Look for the Spencer McMullen x Converse Chuck 70 to release on April 23rd at select retailers and Converse.com. The retail price tag is set at $100 USD.
